I recently tried a thinkpad laptop and think that the pointing stick is a really nice idea. If the next iteration of the typematrix keyboard would feature a pointing stick, I would not hesitate to buy it. I think that just between the backspace and the enter key would be the best place to put it. What do you think?]]>

I am considering getting a blank 2030 keyboard with clear Qwerty and Colemak skins. What do the clear skins feel like? If I don't like the skin I won't be able to just go back to a plain blank board.

Keyboard Layouts for Windows (all versions) http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/63/keyboard-layouts-for-windows-all-versions Sun, 06 Nov 2011 18:58:36 -0500 TypeMatrix_admin 63@/discussions http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=22339

It lets you create Hardware Keyboard profiles, and thereby lets you essentially reprogram the keyboard any way you'd like, including the ability, for example, to use the underutilized Alt-Gr layer for pretty much anything you'd want. We've recently successfully used it to create a UK Dvorak keyboard map (something Windows is inexplicably missing) for the upcoming UK Dvorak skin.

So if you're excited about remapping the TypeMatrix, switch to 102 or 106 key mode (for the most flexibility) and download this program and have some fun. After creating your new layout, select Project -> Build DLL and it will even create an installation package that you can share with others. Run the included setup.exe file to add the new profile to your system, which you can then select via the Control Panel.

A couple notes of caution: while this can easily be used to add new Keyboard Hardware profiles, we haven't figured out a way to remove them once they are added to the system. This isn't really a problem, but keep it in mind when naming your creations - maybe include a version number at the end. Also, the software does a lot of checking on things in the background and sometime runs slow or seems to freeze. Just give it a couple of minutes, we've never actually had it crash on us, it just takes time.

Please let us know what cool things you were able to do with this!

gaming / plover / steno http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/4009/gaming-plover-steno Mon, 06 Feb 2012 07:33:28 -0500 matiu 4009@/discussions
I heard that keyboards have matrices of keys wired to diodes and most have like 3-6 diodes .. so you can hold down for example wghl on some cheap keyboard as each key is on a different matrix, but you couldn't hold down 'weds'.

So hard core gamers get keyboards with n-key rollover, meaning if they're holding like all four arrow keys and 5 number keys .. they all still work.

Me, I want to learn steno as shown here:

They say it's possible to get to 225 wpm for most people .. some do 360 wpm and the record is like 600 wpm.

it works by mashing multiple keys at once to make words and phrases, max of 22 keys at once (you don't actually need 22 fingers, as long as at least one key is down the whole time, it's considered a 'chord').

I'd like to know how many diodes and matrixes does the typematrix have ? how many keys can I mash :)

Also, it'd be great if a futre version had n-key rollover if the current one doesn't (which I hope it does already).

You can learn steno yourself with 'plover-fly': http://plover.stenoknight.com/2011/12/fly-plover-fly.html

About two years ago, I bought a TypeMatrix 2030 USB with a Dvorak mapping. I got a Bépo skin with it, but never really bothered trying to use it. I have to say I'm very satisfied with this keyboard (I'm typing this email with it), and I am considering buying some more for home.

That said, I have a couple of comments which, I hope, can help you improve this keyboard for the next iterations (2040?).

I find that a couple of keys are located in an non optimal way.
- The fn key should be relocated more towards the middle of the keyboard to be accessible by both hands, and leave room for a full size left Control key (it is too small on the 2030 and should match the size of the right one, which is good).
- The page up/down keys may be more easily accessible as fn+up, fn+down. I have to admit I like the Macintosh iBook mapping, which I find is very logical:
* fn+up = page up,
* fn+right = home,
* fn+left = end,
* fn+down = page down.
This would break the current numpad layout, though, so it may require a bit more thought. I don't have much use for this keypad myself.
- More generally the rightmost column of keys can sometimes be annoying as it breaks the axial symmetry of the keyboard and they are often hit by mistake. Most of these functions could be relocated as fn functions of other keys. I'd also prefer the www and mail key a bit less in reach (maybe higher on the keyboard).
- I find all keys which emulate keyboard shortcuts *combinations* (ctrl+x, ctrl+c, ctrl+d, ...) useless. They'd be better replaced by standard multimedia keys (like the play, mute and volume ones) which can easily be remapped in software (rather than hard-wired to an arbitrary OS's defaults) if need be, or free room to relocate the rightmost column (:.
- Finally, an embedded USB 2.0 hub would be great.

In addition to those comments I made in this email, a new feature I think would be also great is a SmartCard reader. Something like the chip in the SCM SCR335 would do (and extra PIN-typing mode which doesn't go through the computer at all, maybe signalled to the user with a LED, would be *awesome*). This way, I could have a perfect and easily transportable keyboard/smartcard reader for all my input and OpenPGP-related needs.

Anyway. Great keyboard!]]>

Colemak and recommendation on which keyboard/skin http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/4455/colemak-and-recommendation-on-which-keyboardskin Wed, 04 Apr 2012 04:53:39 -0400 cgo 4455@/discussions I am considering getting a typematrix keyboard. I am currently learning the Colemak layout, after many years of Qwerty/Qwertz.
There are two options which I can imagine to work:
1. Blank keyboard and a skin for qwerty (for the learning phase, I am still very slow in Colemak and it takes much of my concentration just to type right), and an additional Colemak skin, when they are available.
2. Qwerty keyboard and a Colemak skin when they are available.

I was wondering which option typematrix users would recommend to me.
Is it any good to type on that silicone layer? I can't really imagine it feels as good as a "real" (hard plastic) keyboard,
but I have never tried it.
I am personally currently more inclined to the second option.

Also, does anyone have some information on whether those colemak skins are going to be available any time soon?
That theme seems to be going on for over a year, looking at the dates of posts in this forum.

I would rather order my keyboard today than tomorrow, but I really would like a colemak skin and don't want to order again (and pay postage again...).

Notes:
* When you run uhidd don't use -k flag. This will screw things up with TypeMatrix (Edit: actually this depends on kernel config)
* For Xorg key names, check files in /usr/local/share/X11/xkb/symbols
* Until you have configured uhidd I recommend having PS2 keyboard around. Because
when you will launch uhidd for the first time to generate cc_keymap file, typematrix might not be very usable.
* Don't quit uhidd (when you launch it for the first time) until you have copied cc_keymap file... otherwise it will be removed
* xev might not show that you have pressed key, if it is intercepted by your Window Manager.
* The Eject, Power, Sleep, Wake buttons still won't work (AFAIK)

I seem not able to find the right key combination to fix it. Restart is the only option I know.

- The arrow keys and numpad are hard to find by just feeling them. Now it's slower for me to find them than on my old traditional keyboard, because I can't feel their shape. I would like them to be physically separate from the other keys, and shaped so that it's possible to _feel_ their location without looking at the keyboard. In other words, there should be some empty space around the arrows/numpad, and they should break free from TypeMatrix's rectangular matrix layout.

- Some key combinations cannot be pressed, because some of the keys found from a regular keyboard are behind the Function key. For example in my programming environment one hotkey is Alt+Insert, which cannot be typed on TypeMatrix 2030 (instead I need to use the mouse). I would like a physical button for each standard key.

- I don't care about the custom keys (media player controls, mail, www, calc etc.) so they can be removed, and their buttons could instead be used for the standard keys (insert, print screen, pause etc.).

I've created a mockup of what kind of a keyboard I would like. You can see it here: http://pic.twitter.com/rgABtSsh Some details are not fine-tuned (for example I haven't thought about where to put the key which is left of "Z" in some keyboard layouts - I use Finnish/Swedish QWERTY), but I hope you get the basic idea. (Also the empty space in front of the keyboard could be used for a wrist support.)

The main modifications in this mockup are:

- Physical numpad, with a some empty space around it to make it easier to feel where it is when you move your hand there to use it. This helps in typing the numbers accurately and quickly.

- Arrow keys with some empty space around them, so that it's easier to feel where they are when you move your hand to use them. I use the arrow keys very often (all programmers navigate in existing code more than they write new code), so they should be easy to reach. In this mockup they are reachable for both hands (I haven't tried it in action, but I hope it'll work well). One more idea is to put the Page Up/Down closer to the Arrows/Home/End, so that all navigation keys can be used together.

- Removed all non-standard keys and replaced them with standard keys. Their locations are not too important, so they could also be in some other places, for example above the numpad (as long as there is some empty space all around the numpad).

What do you think of a layout like this? Is there any hope of getting something like that produced?]]>

It works fine but my problem is that my "cut, copy, paste" keys are also changed.
Is there a solution to this?

Thanks.

Spanish support http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/30/spanish-support Thu, 03 Mar 2011 04:35:38 -0500 amaneiro 30@/discussions
it seems that a spanish skin/keyboard is going out the streets soon, as you advertised in the main page. I like the idea of having both qwerty and dvorak (and even colemak!) in the same keyboard, so I'd like to try typematrix. In order to make an informed decision about which product fits me better, I'd like to know...

* What do you plan to sell for spanish language: skins or keyboards?
* Are you gonna sell both dvorak & qwerty keyboards with spanish support? Only one?

Thanks in advance.]]>
Column not working http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/42/column-not-working Wed, 01 Jun 2011 04:23:09 -0400 replix 42@/discussions
I use a 2030 keyborard for a little more than a year now. This morning 4 keys of the third column are not working.

Does anybody has an idea of what to do as my keyboard in not under warranty any more (and I'm in France)?

Thanks in advance,

Key blocked http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/46/key-blocked Mon, 04 Jul 2011 13:38:38 -0400 valeuf 46@/discussions
I got a problem with my 2030 USB Typematrix keyboard. I am using it intesively for 2 years and half, but today, the end and down arrow key are stucked.

Checking the result in a program like XEV, I got that these keys are always pressed. (I have a long list of keycode 115 and 114...). Touching hese keys sometimes stops the feed ....But globally the keyboard is unusuable now ...

I have extremely hard time to use another keyboard, so I hope you have some solution for me!

Thank you]]>
Skins slide off http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/38/skins-slide-off Thu, 28 Apr 2011 23:23:14 -0400 Rochelle13x 38@/discussions Changing shuffle key http://forum.typematrix.com/discussion/4378/changing-shuffle-key Sun, 04 Mar 2012 15:21:32 -0500 kai 4378@/discussions i am new user of the Typematrix 2030 - and so far i really like it.
My problem is: I am using the keyboard with a new german layout called Neo2 and therefore i need the shuffle key remaped as ISO_Level5_Shift NoSymbol ISO_Level5_Shift in the ubuntu Xmodmap.
But this key seems to work different and i cant find the keycode with xev.
Any help?
Sorry for my rudimentary english… ]]>
